Liverpool vs Villarreal | The Unstoppable Liverpool Sink The Yellow Submarine In First Leg

LIVERPOOL VS VILLARREAL | THE UNSTOPPABLE LIVERPOOL
The red is currently at their top best now, after a comfortable 2-0 win over Villarreal, Liverpool moved closer to qualifying for their third UEFA Champions League (UCL) final in five years. The six-time European champions have advanced from nine of their previous 11 semi-finals in this competition, and a commanding first-leg performance puts them in a prime position to improve on that.

It’s not often that a David and Goliath encounter occurs in a UCL semi-final, but Villarreal’s entire population could fit inside Anfield with seats to spare, highlighting the magnitude of the challenge ahead of them. Unai Emery, who had advanced from 31 of his previous 37 knockout ties, was one thing they had going for them.

His tactical brilliance guided the ‘Yellow Submarine’ past Juventus and Bayern Munich, and his fingerprints were all over the first half as the visitors attempted to settle in and take the sting out of Merseyside’s electrifying atmosphere.

Jürgen Klopp’s side will need patience after a difficult first half in which they were mostly limited to half-chances. Sadio Mané’s effort was diverted by Ral Albiol, and Luis Daz stung Gerónimo Rulli’s palms twice.  Thiago is a fantastic footballer!  Although Thiago Alcântara’s long-range strike cannoned off the post, they were the ‘Reds’ only efforts on target before the break.

Liverpool attempted to capitalize on their dominance after the restart, despite being deprived of the typical advantage of kicking towards the Kop. Moments later, Fabinho had the ball in the net, but the offside flag halted his celebrations. After an unfortunate deflection from Pervis Estupián, Jordan Henderson’s cross was too much for Rulli to deal with, and Anfield erupted.

The first goal may have come by chance, but the second, which came just two minutes later, was the result of some brilliant build-up play. Mané had just enough time to accelerate onto Mohamed Salah’s perfect through ball before putting it beyond the goalie. Senegal’s 14th goal in the UCL knockout rounds ties Didier Drogba for the most by an African player in competition history.

Despite the steady attack, Liverpool was unable to add a third goal, but they will travel to Spain with a significant advantage as they seek a seventh European title in what might be a historic season.
